Abstract

691,510. Purifying liquids; gravity-separation apparatus. INFILCO, Inc. Aug. 22, 1951 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 19773/51. Class 46 In a slurry type liquid treating apparatus comprising a tank 10, Fig. 1, having a bottom 11 and an upstanding wall 12, liquid and reagent enter an axially aligned mixing and reaction chamber 20 through conduit 55 and line 56 respectively to be mixed in the presence of slurry by a rotor 50, driven by motor reducer 54, the liquid passing downwardly between outer and inner tubes 21, 22 to a centrally apertured floor 24, spaced from the bottom of the tank through ports 26 to four hollow arms 25 extending outwardly across the bottom of the tank, the arms 25 having a plurality of discharge orifices 27 through which the slurry passes, the majority of which drives any sludge deposited into a sump 16 to be removed by a blow-off conduit 17, and then passes up through the tube 22 to mix with incoming liquid, clear liquid being removed through conduit 15 after overflowing a weir 13 into launder 14. The chamber 20 and arms 25 are rotated by motor 49 through speed reducer 48, pinion 47 and ring gear 46, the weight of the chamber being taken by rollers 41 journaled in bearings 42 supported from a beam 43 spanning the tank, the rollers 41 co-operating with a channel 40 surrounding the upper end of the outer tube 21. To centre the chamber 20, a plurality of guide rollers 44 journaled in bearings 45 supported from the beam 43 contact the channel 40, and a shaft 38 fixed to a spider 39 mounted on the inner tube 22 is journaled in a guide bearing 37 carried by a plate 35 supported above the sump 16 by a bracket 36. The arms 25, which are supported at their outer ends by braces or cables 28, slope downwardly from their inner ends and each carries a pair of baffle plates 30 the lower edges of which are parallel to, and spaced slightly from, the bottom of the tank 10. In a modification intended for the treatment of liquid containing relatively small quantities of light solids the tank is formed with a flat bottom and an upwardly expanding wall such as an inverted frusto-conical portion which may, or may not, be surmounted by a cylindrical portion. The distributing arms are horizontal and parallel to the bottom of the tank, the baffles being dispensed with. No sludge sump is provided, a solids outlet conduit being connected directly to the tank bottom. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, the inner tube 22a is stationary, and only the outer tube 21 and arms 25 rotate. A concrete tank 10a is formed with an inwardly sloping bottom 11a and annular sump 16a which is emptied by sludge pickup lines 18 and pipe 17. The central portion of the bottom 11a supports columns 60 which carry the inner end of a bridge 61. The inner tube 22a is secured to thecolumns 60 and its outwardly extending lower portion 62 carries a ring 63 which supports a rubber or like flexible curtain 65 hanging freely over a collar 64 secured to the floor 24a of the outer tube 21. Slots are formed in portion 62 to pass the columns 60. The horizontally extending arms 25 carry baffles 30 as in the first embodiment. In a modification the outer tube is extended below its floor to the same distance from the tank bottom as the lower edges of the baffle plates 30, ports being provided in this skirt aligned with the arms 25.
