Abstract

<PICT:0691467/III/1> After the removal of articles from a dry cleaning machine, the solvent is removed therefrom and the articles dried by placing them in a perforated rotatable inner cage of a machine having a fixed outer casing surrounding the inner cage, the inner cage is rotated at a gradually increasing speed to distribute the articles evenly over the peripheral surface of the cage, the speed is then increased to remove a large proportion of the solvent by centrifugal action, air heated by heating means arranged in the space between the cage and the casing is then circulated through the inner cage to remove the remaining solvent, steam being injected into the air flow for a predetermined period of the operation to enable the articles to take up moisture equivalent to the natural regain, and the speed of the cage is then finally reduced to tumble and open out the articles before removing them from the cage. A suitable machine comprises an openwork cylindrical inner cage 1, with a loading opening 1b at one end, supported axially at the other end on a trunnion 2, enclosed by a fixed cylindrical casing 3 having a corresponding loading opening and an outlet 4 at the bottom tangential to the casing for removing the liquid leaving the cage, and a cover 6 fitted over its loading opening provided with a central hole 7 or apertures of limited size to admit air to the machine. Vanes 15 may be fitted to the outside of the cage 1, and a wire mesh guard 8 over the cover 6. A space 6a is left between the cover and the hole 1b. Heating coils 13, 14 are arranged between the cage 1 and the casing 3 to heat the air in the casing and the articles in the cage and also to prevent condensation of steam which is supplied through nozzles 9, 10 during the steaming period. The outlet 4 is connected to a condenser, the flow being assisted by a suction pump if desired.
