Abstract

2 - Phenyl - 3 - methylamino - butanol - 2 and 2 - phenyl - 3 - methylamino - butane are made by reacting 2-phenylacetoin with methylamine in the presence of either activated aluminium or hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst, the molar ratio of 2-phenylacetoin to methylamine being between 1 : 1 and 1 : 2. Examples are given of the two methods. The product is converted into a mixture of hydrochlorides which are separated by their different solubilities in chloroform.
