Abstract

690,461. Cooling and drying air. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 23, 1951 [Jan. 12, 1951], No. 19948/51. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] Air is simultaneously cooled and dried by passing it through the evaporator of a refrigeration unit whilst flowing a hygroscopic liquid over the evaporator, the liquid absorbing the air moisture and then being distributed over the refrigeration condenser through which is directed a second stream of air, this air evaporating the moisture from the liquid, which is then recycled to the evaporator. In the form shown, the apparatus consists of a container 2 divided by a partition 3 into two compartments 4 and 5, a refrigerator compressor 9 and a condenser 10 being located in compartment 5 and the evaporator 12 in compartment 4. Air to be conditioned is drawn by a fan 7 into compartment 4 and discharged therefrom through the evaporator 12 which cools it to the desired temperature. A hygroscopic liquid such as triethylene glycol or lithium chloride or bromide or calcium chloride solution is pumped by a pump 19 from a sump 17 in the base of compartment 4 to nozzles 21 which spray it over the evaporator, the air moisture being absorbed and the diluted liquid draining back to the sump. Pump 19 also feeds part of the liquid through a line 22 to nozzles which spray it over the condenser 10, a fan 8 drawing a second stream of air through the condenser to evaporate the water from the hygroscopic liquid and also to condense the refrigerant, the latter then being forced by the compressor 9 through a pipe 13 and capillary 14 to the evaporator. The concentrated liquid drains into a sump 18 in the base of compartment 5 and overflows into sump 17 over a weir 19<SP>1</SP>. For further concentration of the liquid, a pump 25 maintains a local circulation of the liquid from sump 18 over the condenser. If a very low air dew point is not required in the room to be conditioned, the air leaving the evaporator may be sprayed with water through a nozzle 28, this also producing a further cooling effect. A thermostat 31 in the room space operates first to close a solenoid valve 30 in the water spray supply line when the room temperature falls below a certain point and subsequently to stop the compressor 9 if the temperature continues to fall.
