Abstract

690,044. Moulding confectionery. SANDALL PRECISION CO., Ltd., and BARKER, A. W. July 27, 1951 [April 28, 1950], No. 10566/50. Class 87 (ii) [Also in Group VI] A plant combined into a unit for making sugar confectionery comprises a batch rolling machine 2-18 for making a circular rope of confectionery arranged above and movable away from a cooler 1 to provide access to the cooler, and moulding machine 4, receiving the rope from the batch roller 2-18, the moulding machine forming individual sweets and reversing the flow of confectionery to pass it to the cooler 1. The sugar rope making machine 1 comprises rollers 18 driven from an electric motor 19 through a reversing gear box preferably as described in Specification 689,105. One end is mounted on a pair of pedestals 22 carrying cross bars 23 with rollers 24. The other end is likewise supported whereby the machine 2 can be slid crossways to allow access to the cooler 1. The slope of the machine 1 can be adjusted by hydraulic cylinders 28 raising or lowering the support 26 at one end. The cylinders 28 and operating foot pedal 31 may be as described in Specification 689,104. Longitudinal adjustment may also be provided towards or from the rope sizing machine 3. The rope machine comprises pairs of sizing wheels 32 to progressively reduce the diameter of the rope. The moulding machine 4 to form individual sweets from the rope as in Specification 674,189 comprises a rotary die 33 having peripheral moulding pockets 34 Fig. 5 co-operating with a pair of die wheels 35, 36 with like pockets to sever and mould individual shapes e.g. drops, balls, cushions, &c. The die wheels 34, 35, 36 may be changed and adjusted. Successive severed sections of the sugar rope are pushed sideways into the pockets 34 by reciprocable plunger dies 37 and are ejected by ejector dies 38 actuated by cams. These dies may be vibrated to prevent adhesion of the sweets to them. The sweets are delivered to the upper cooling endless belt 8 where jets of cold air from a perforated duct 11 are provided. The whole machine is driven from a motor 56 Fig. 5 and gear box 57 with five different speeds or by an infinite variable mechanical or hydraulic gear. Separate controls are provided for the rope making machine 1 and for a centre filling machine (if used) such control being on panel 6. The moulding machine is enclosed in an air chamber casing 17 to which air heated by variable control electric element 60 is supplied through nozzle 59 to flow around the rotary dies 34. The cooler comprises wire mesh endless belts 8, 9, 10 with perforated ducts 11, 12, 13, above to blow jets of cold air on the sweets, such as described in Specification 677,651, [Group XXX]. To make sweets with centre fillings a centre filling machine 5 such as described in Specification 670,795, [Group XXVIII], is added to the unit. Such machine may have a pressure balancer e.g. as described in Specification 690,043, [Group XXVIII], to supply centre filling material at a predetermined pressure. The tube with pressure filling is led to the beginning of the confectionery rope making machine 2 and extends longitudinally along the trough of rollers 18 so that the centre filling is incorporated in the rope.
