Abstract

A sealing composition comprises (1) 100 parts by weight of an organopolysiloxane in which the organic radicals are alkyl and/or monocyclic aryl radicals, the siloxane being benzene-soluble and having a viscosity of at least 100,000 cs. at 25 DEG C; (2) from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a silica powder having a pore volume of at least 4 ccs. per gram and a heat of wetting of from 0.3 to 1 calorie per c.c. of pore volume; and (3) from 100 to 500 parts by weight of a heat-stable inorganic filler other than (2). The polymers used contain principally diorganosiloxane units, and may contain limited amounts of RSiO 3/2 or R3SiO 1/2 units. Plastic materials are formed when the polymers are compounded with the fillers, solvents being employed for compounding the solid polymers. Heat-stable fillers specified are: diatomaceous earth, clay, iron oxide, alumina, titania, calcium carbonate and zinc oxide. Pigments may be added to the compositions. In examples: (1) a dimethylpolysiloxane was compounded with diatomaceous earth and a silica powder; and (2) a copolymer containing 95 mol. per cent of dimethylsiloxane and 5 mol. per cent of phenylmethylsiloxane was milled with diatomaceous earth and a silica aerogel. The products are used for caulking, e.g. aquariums, and sealing glass in aluminium window frames.
