Abstract

689,453. Vibratory pulverizing mills. TRIGGS, W. W. (Vibro-Dynamic Engineering, Inc.). Jan. 21, 1949, No. 1770/49. Class 59 In a pulverizer the container for the material and pulverizing elements is oscillated in resonance at a predetermined frequency whilst being subjected to a rotary movement. As shown, Fig. 1, material to be ground is placed, along with balls or rods, in a container 8 which is firmly mounted in a frame 6 adapted to slide in grooves 5 formed in a framework 4. Rotation of framework 4 is effected by the motor 14 and pulleys and belt 11, 12, 13, whilst oscillatory motion is imparted to the frame 6 by positioning at one end thereof a spring 7 and providing at the other end a shaft 10 vibrated by means of an eccentrically mounted crank 16 the shaft 10 being coaxial with and slidable in the shaft 3 upon which the framework 4 is mounted. In a further embodiment similar to that shown 'in Fig. 1 two containers connected together by a horizontal spring are mounted in the frame 4 the vibration of the shaft 10 being through an adjustable clutch mechanism such that the oscillatory motion of the frame and containers may be started up, at the correct frequency, from zero amplitude. In yet a further embodiment horizontal oscillations are imparted to a continuously operated ball mill. In the apparatus shown in Figs 4 and 5 the container- 8 is given both vertical and horizontal vibratory movements whilst being rotated the horizontal movements being effected in a similar manner to that described with reference to Fig. 1. The bearings 2 for theshafts 3 of the rotating frame 4 are mounted in members 21 which are slidably mounted in vertical guides 22, springs 23 being positioned between each of the members 21 and the support 1. Attached to the members 21 is a yoke 24, which, through a link 26 fixed eccentrically to the motor driven disc 25, is given simple harmonicmotion. The motor 14 rotates the frame 4 with container 8 through pulleys and belt 77, 78, 80, vertical motion of the shafts 3 and pulley 78 being allowed for by a resilient belt-tightening pulley 81. A similar belt-tensioning pulley 73 is provided for thebelt 70 effecting rotary motion of the container &c.
