Abstract

688,935. Assembling resilient mountings. DECOURDEMANCHE, J. H. Aug. 14, 1950 [Aug. 22, 1949], No. 20100/50. Class 108 (iii). A method of assembling resilient mountings of the kind comprising a rubber bush 3 (Fig. 1), disposed with radial compression and axial elongation between inner and outer members 1, 2 comprises applying the bush to one of the members 1 with partial deformation and then applying the other member with a combined relative endwise and rotary movement. The bush 3 when mounted in the outer rigid member 1 (Fig. 1), is placed over a spigot 6 on a table 4. Rotation of the bush 3 is inhibited by a spring 5 which is in frictional engagement with the bush 3 and is bolted to the table 4 at 24. The inner member 2 is mounted between a head 8 and a tapered leader member 7. The head 8 is carried by a shaft 25 which may be given simultaneous rotational and downward axial movement. Torque is transmitted between the head 8 and the sleeve 2, by means of a rubber sleeve 15 (Fig. 3), which is compressed between respective frusto - conical - shaped shoulders on a bolt 10 and a bush 17, by the interengagement of respective threaded portions 18 on the bolt 10 and head 8. The lower end of the bolt 10 has a slotted connection with a projection 13 rigid with a spigot 32 on the leader member 7. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the torque is transmitted by the frictional engagement of a coiled spring disposed in the annular space between the bolt 10 (which in this case is rigid with the head 8), and the bush 2. In a further alternative, Fig. 4 (not shown), the torque is transmitted through a one-way roller-and-ratchet clutch. The rubber bush 3 may be disposed in the rigid bush 1 by conventional methods such as that described in Specification 309,952, [Class 108 (iii)], or may be inserted with a combined rotary and axial motion. The leader member 7 may have helical threads disposed on its surface. The axial movement of the shaft 25 during one revolution thereof should then preferably be equal to the pitch of the thread on the leader member 7. The invention may be applied to the assembly of a bushing, Fig. 7 (not shown), in which the space between the inner and outer rigid members is of sinuous form when the bushing is viewed in axial cross-section.
