Abstract
688,878. Surgical appliances. BARZILAI, G. April 9, 1951 [April 8, 1950], No. 8210/51. Class 81 (ii). An appliance, for use in determining the dimensions of the cavity bounded by the hip bones, comprises a universally mounted scale associated with a director device which is constrained to move in a plane parallel to the scale about an axis passing through its centre. The appliance is mounted on a stand provided with means for clamping it to the couch and an arm carries a ball and socket connection 8, at the lower end of which an angular scale 18 is attached. An arm, pivoted at the centre of the scale, is secured to a rigid, adjustable member 22 having a channelled director member 25 at its lower end. The physician's hand is inserted into the cavity with the index finger extending in line with the member 25 and, as it is directed to touch the inner edges of the hip bones, a stud, at the upper end of the member 22, pushes pointers 19, 20 outwards to indicate the angle between them. The distances are measured on the hand itself. A scale 27, having equally spaced perforations, may be attached in order to determine dimensions on an X-ray photograph.
