Class 118 (ii) [Also in Group XXXV] A single operation, or each of a number of sequential operations, say in a manufacturing process, is terminated upon a rotary stepping switch receiving a pre-selected number of electrical impulses from an impulse generator which furnishes pulses at "unit" rate whilst the operation is proceeding. Each pulse may represent the passage of a unit of time. or a unit of quantity, such as a given flow of liquid. The termination of one operation may automatically initiate the next operation, the programme of operations being in the form of a punched sheet which cooperates with a photo-electric system or a system of contact fingers and drums, one set of punchings determining the sequence of the operations to be performed and another set determining the number of steps the rotary switch must make to terminate each operation, the arrangement being such that the sheet advances to a new position to present another set of punchings at the termination of each operation. In a modified arrangement, which is less flexible as regards change of programme, the programme sheet is dispensed with and the programme determined by which contacts of a rotary programme switch (of the pre-selector telephone type) are connected to the controlled apparatus. Permanent connection between the contacts of another bank of this switch and the contacts of the rotary pulse counting switch determine the duration of each operation. Manually operated multi-way switches may be provided in these " permanent " connections and between the controlled apparatus and the contacts of the programme switch to allow a certain flexibility of programme. When the apparatus is required to control a single operation only, such as the delivery of a predetermined quantity of fluid, the pulse counting mechanism may comprise three rotary stepping switches arranged to count hundreds, tens and units, respectively, and manually operated selector switches connected so as to determine the count by each stepping switch.
