Abstract
688,043. Magnetic recording apparatus. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. March 19, 1951 [March 20, 1950], No. 6887/50. Class 40 (ii). In a magnetic recording apparatus as in Specification 684,569, the carriage 50, Fig. 3, supporting the magnetic heads is made to continuously move across the width of the tape by means of a leadscrew 57 which is driven by the record band via the recording roller 19, a double worm drive gearing 64, 65, 66, 67 and a slipping clutch 69, 70, 71 which permits the carriage 50 to be moved manually by means of a handle 77. The passage of the magnetic heads is indicated by means of a numbered dial 79 which is moved step by step at each revolution of the leadscrew 57 by a singletoothed arm 84 on the leadscrew 57 and an idler gear 81. The numerals on the dial 79 show through a window 89 in the lid of the casing. An alternative clutch 91, 92, 93 (Fig. 5) is described in which balls replace the friction lining, and. recesses are provided whereby the leadscrew 57 may be rotated manually in steps of 180 degrees, or any other desired exact amount. The metallic shorting strip provided at a certain position on the band serves to stop the driving motor when required when a datum line on the band passes a fixed point in the machine. For this purpose the record/replay switch 10 (Fig. 6) is provided with a central position in which an electric supply 100 is not connected to the motor 38 until a press switch 11 is closed, whereby a relay 107 is energized to close normally-open switch contacts 108, 105 and the motor 38 thereby started, circuit being maintained after release of switch 11 through contacts 111, 112 of the relay 107: When the shorting strip on the band connects contacts 14, 96, Fig. 1, relay 116 is temporarily tripped so that circuit through relay 107 is broken, and both relays returned to their normal positions (as shown) and the motor circuit broken. Specification 678,038, [Group VIII], also is referred to.
