Abstract

687,423. Bush and like extractors. CHURCHILL & CO., Ltd., V. L. May 16, 1951 [May 16, 1950], No. 12208/50. Class 61 (iii). A bush extractor particularly for use in extracting the outer cups of taper roller bearings of motor car road wheels comprises a push member adapted to bear on the hub of the wheel assembly and a pull member having fixed to the free end thereof a frusto-conical pad adapted to expand a segmented ring and cause it to bear on the internal face and end of the cup. The push member comprises a cylindrical body 1 having an enlarged hollow end 6 and internally threaded to receive the pull member comprising a screw 4 having a reduced portion 9 and a threaded end 11 on which is screwed one of a number of end pads 14 of various sizes. Each end pad has a conical outer surface and a square section flange 15. A segmented ring 16 having a cylindrical inner surface outwardly flared at 18 is introduced into position around the end pad 14. The ring has a conical cuter surface 19 flanged at 21 to mate with the conical surface and outer end of the cup 20 when the ring is expanded by partial withdrawal of the screw, continued withdrawal of the screw causing endwise pressure on the cup to forcibly withdraw it from its bearing. An adaptor ring may be at tached to the member 6. The tool is used without the expansion ring for inserting bearing cups by passing the screw 4 into the housing in the reverse direction.
