687,340. Vehicle fittings for loading; loadhandling machines. PHIL WOOD INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1950. [Aug. 8, 1949] No. 17588/52. Divided out of 687,302. Drawings to Specification. Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv). Apparatus for loading vehicles of the type comprising a platform connected to the vehicle and adapted to receive a load at ground level, which platform can be then raised, while being held substantially horizontal, to the height of the floor of the vehicle, and can then be pivoted, either by hand or power, into a vertical position to form the tailgate of the vehicle, is characterised by a hydraulic piston and cylinder actuator for raising the platform, means for admitting fluid under pressure to the cylinder to move its piston to raise the platform, and means adapted when the platform reaches a given level automatically to divert fluid under pressure from the cylinder to balance the fluid pressure acting on the piston against the weight of the platform and its load acting on the piston. The embodiment disclosed is identical with that described in Specification 687,302.
