Abstract

686,974. Photographic processes. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION. Nov. 19, 1951 [May 19, 1951], No. 27092/51. Class 98 (ii). A method of transferring a picture-carrying layer from one kinematograph film to another comprises continuously feeding the two films in registered contact and pressing them together while the face of the layer is sufficiently tacky to cling to the new film lightly, subsequently heating the layer sufficiently to bond it tightly to the new film, and then peeling the new film and the layer from the old film. Apparatus for the method comprises means for guiding the films along separate paths into registered contact at one location, thence along a common path to a second location, and thence along separate paths; means along one of the firstmentioned separate paths for softening the face of the layer sufficiently to render it tacky, means at the first location for pressing the films into registered contact, means between the locations for heating the layer sufficiently to bond it tightly to the new film, and means for peeling the new film and the layer from the old film at the second location. The method may be used, e.g. with multilayer films in which the layers (except the last) are transferred after exposure to other films for treatment, such as the film described in U.S.A. Specification 2,367,665. As shown, a three-layer film M and a blank film N are unwound from reels 1, 2 respectively and are led through a wetting tank 6. This renders the top layer of film M tacky, and may slightly loosen it from the film. The films are then pressed together by rollers 7 and are then seated on a pin belt 3 by an endless sealing belt 8. Pin belt 3, driven by drums 5, carries the films to a roller 12. During this travel the films adhere sufficiently strongly not to slip. The films are led over roller 12 and through a heating bath 13 which may contain water at about 90‹ F., which causes the top layer to adhere firmly to film N. The films are then led through unheated water in a tank 18, and are stripped apart below the surface of this water. As the films are led away they are sprayed by nozzles 19 to remove the remaining adhesive. The second layer may be transferred to a second blank film in a similar manner.
