Abstract

In order to avoid constricting the neck of a patient in an "iron lung" the sealing member is made to engage the body along a line running from the sternum over the clavicle to the nape of the neck. The diaphragm by means of which the sealing member is secured to the body of the appliance is made of strong rubber while the sealing portion is of soft rubber. It may be flat, engaging the surface of the body over an appreciable area or it may be formed as two annuli joined along their outer edges, to form a V-shaped space between them, thus engaging the body along two adjacent lines. The sealing member may also be backed by sponge rubber.
