Abstract
Interpolymers which may be converted to molecularly oriented fibres and other articles such as films, comprise 78-82 per cent acrylonitrile, 3-7 per cent vinylidene chloride and 15 per cent vinyl chloride and have a molecular weight of at least 10,000. The interpolymers may be prepared in any known manner from the corresponding proportions of monomers. They may be dissolved in nitromethane or nitroethane and extruded into a coagulating bath containing an aromatic hydrocarbon liquid, e.g. naphtha, benzene, toluene or xylene. The resulting fibres are afterwards cold-drawn and heat-treated. Prior to or simultaneously with the cold drawing, the fibres may be treated with a liquid, e.g. mineral oil, acting as a lubricant and/or heat transfer medium, which may be washed out with, for example, xylene. They may also be twisted and given a textile finish, e.g. of an aqueous solution of white oil, glycerine, olive oil and sulphonated isobutyl oleate. In an example, the copolymers are prepared in aqueous emulsion containing an alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate emulsifying agent, ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite.
