Abstract

<PICT:0685865/IV (b)/1> In the fermentation of organic matter to produce methane, the floating layer of sludge in the fermentation chamber is loosened by directing at least one vertically moving, and rotating or oscillating jet of liquid substantially horizontally outwards with respect to the axis of rotation or oscillation into the said layer. Preferably the jet delivers radially and moves in a helical path. A plurality of fermentation chambers may be provided, thermally insulated, and material to be fermented may be introduced as the washing stream, after heating, if desired, liquid displaced thereby being returned. A pump may be mounted in each chamber, taking up liquid, preferably from a lower level, and discharging it as a jet, rotation being produced by reaction of the jet or by an external drive. A single pump may be connected so that liquid may be fed or withdrawn from any chamber or fed to a storage vessel or mixer wherein with drawn liquid is mixed with fresh material for fermentation. Liquid withdrawn by pump P through a line b is forced by line a into a control tube on which the jet delivery head 2 fits telescopically. This has a nozzle for radial discharge, and a further opening controlled by a flap valve d2 which can be used for discharging sludge by applying suction. A shaft i rotates the head which is moved vertically as by a lifting screw or pulleys. A second delivery and suction head d1 may be positioned at the bottom of the chamber. Organic waste is mixed with liquid in mixer f and fed by pipe g and pump P to the fermentation chamber. Gas is led by pipe r to a gasometer. Displaced liquid flows back by overflow e and pipe c to the mixer. When fermentation is complete, sludge is withdrawn by pipes a or b, fed to a press, and used as a manure, if desired after further processing.
