Abstract

685,740. Washing-machines. BOTHNER, M. E. Feb. 28, 1951. [March 4, 1950 ; Aug. 9, 1950; Sept. 9, 1950] No. 4939/51. Class 138(ii). A washing-machine tank has four sides 2, 3, 4, 1 lying tangential to a spiral curve, Fig. 2 (not shown), drawn from the centre of a, motor driven agitator 9 fitting closely within an offset aperture in the base 6 of the tank, deflecting members 5 being interposed between adjacent sides of the tank, and inclined members 7 interposed between the base 6 and the sides 1, 2, 3, 4 and members 5. The upper surface of the agitator9 is flush with the base 6 of the tank and has a ring of smoothly rounded depressions 20 formed in it. The agitator 9 has a bevelled periphery 21 which is a, close fit in a similarly shaped part 22 of an agitator housing 11. The agitator 9 has a driving spindle 8 connected to an electric motor 47 through a flexible coupling 41. The spindle 8 also carries a pump impeller 27 which rotates in a pump housing 14 having an inlet opening 33 and an outlet pipe 34 leading to a flexible or other pipe 35. The pump is used for discharging the washing liquid through a drain pipe 31 having a plug 32. A disc 48 fixed to the motor shaft 46 protects the motor from drops of water or oil. Fig. 7 shows a modified agitator 61 having peripheral rings of depressions 62, 63, 64 in its surface, these depressions decreasing progressively in size from the outermost to the innermost ring. The depressions may be circular, elliptical, oval, or polygonal, and of inverted-conical or concave section. In Fig. 7 each depression is made cylindrical near its mouth (as at 65) and rounded off at the top surface of the agitator.
