685,514. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 31, 1951 [May 6, 1949], No. 12914/51. Class 40 (iv). In an electric communication system comprising a multi-pair cable wherein each pair carries one or more channels and automatic means are provided for adjusting the signal level on each pair, a single testing element, e.g. a pilot frequency receiver, is connected in turn to each pair and to each gain-adjusting device to effect the necessary adjustment. If no adjustment of the level on a particular pair is required then the switches for stepping the testing and adjusting apparatus are stepped quickly to the next pair. In a system including a large number of repeaters normal pilot-controlled gain-adjusting devices are provided for all pairs at intervals along the route to effect final adjustment and to cater for surges.
