Abstract

1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 : 6 - Hexachlorocyclohexane is prepared by the chlorination of benzene without the need for illumination in which benzene and chlorine are contacted in a vessel in the presence of water and a hypochlorite and in which at least 50 per cent of the water is introduced in the form of ice. If desired the hypochlorite may be present initially or it may be formed in situ by the action of a small portion of the chlorine on a material selected from the group consisting of mercuric oxide, calcium carbonate, chalk, marl, sodium carbonate, and benzoyl peroxides. It is preferred to carry out the reaction at a low temperature to produce a pure product. Specifications 447,058 and 649,428 are referred to.
