Abstract

A device for use in the bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride in conjunction with a cylindrical container consists of a central rotatable rod carrying (1) a hollow cylindrical frame of approximately the same diameter as the container with inclined vertical bars arranged at its periphery for sweeping the contents of the container towards the centre and (2) a series of inclined bars in the central zone of the device for sweeping the contents of the container towards its periphery. Preferably the leading face of each bar is set in relation to the movement of the bar at a sufficiently small angle to avoid retention of the contents in contact with the bar e.g. at less than 35 degrees, and further each peripheral bar is arranged so that the external face is at any instant parallel to the plane tangential to the wall of the chamber at the point of projection of the centre of the face on to the wall.ALSO:An agitator device, for use in conjunction with a cylindrical container, consists of a central rotatable rod carrying (1) a hollow cylindrical frame of approximately the same diameter as the container with inclined vertical bars arranged at its periphery for sweeping the contents of the container towards the centre and (2) a series of inclined bars in the central zone of the device for sweeping the contents of the container towards its periphery. Preferably the leading face of each bar is set in relation to the movement of the bar at a sufficiently small angle to avoid retention of the contents of the container in contact with the bar, e.g. at less than 35 degrees, and further each peripheral bar is arranged so that the external face is at any instant parallel to the plane tangential to the wall of the chamber at the point of projection of the centre of the face on to the wall. The device may be used for the bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride.
