Abstract
684,492. Endoscopes. SCHRANZ, R. Dec. 21, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1950], No. 831/50. Class 81 (ii) An open-ended tubular sheath for use with an endoscope has an unobstructed interior through which the endoscope is slidably and removably introduced into body tubes or cavities, the sheath serving as a protective lining to the body tubes or cavities. The sheath 1 of metal, e.g. brass, is provided with a handle 4 and rigid mouth 3 attached to the flexible portion 2 of coiled strip metal, e.g. phosphor bronze. An endoscope, having a rigid portion 12 and a leading flexible portion 13, is introduced into the sheath 1 prior to insertion in the body, a hole 21 in the sheath handle 4 being provided to engage a pin 20, at the rear end of the endoscope, when in operative position. The endoscope includes a telescope system consisting of lenses 17, a prism 18, lenses located at intervals within the flexible part 13 and an eyepiece. A lamp 19 is provided and the flexible portion 13 may be covered with a sheath of flexible material e.g. indiarubber. A groove (not shown) is provided internally in the rear portion of the sheath 1 for engagement with a longitudinal rib on a rigid tube (not shown) which is inserted within the sheath 1 for the introduction of an operating instrument, e.g. biopsy forceps, into the body cavity or tube, e.g. oesophagus. A longitudinal channel is formed within the rigid tube to receive the stem of a lamp associated with an endoscope introduced with the operating instrument.
