682,922. Viscosimeters. SCHOU, H. April 3, 1951 [April 3, 1950], No. 7727/51. Class 106 (ii). A viscosimeter of the type in which the viscosity of a substance is determined as a reaction of the resistance of the substance to the rotation of a body therein, comprises a rotatable driving-shaft having a connection with the body which is sufficiently flexible to allow the centre of rotation of the body, on rotation in the substance, automatically to be displaced in a direction towards the longitudinal axis of the container for the substance. In Fig. 1, a flexible shaft 5 connects the rotatable body 1 with the rotor of an electric motor 6, the stator of which is pivotally mounted at 8 so as to turn against spring means 10 and thereby give a measure of the viscosity of the substance 2 in the container 3 when the body 1 is being rotated. In Fig. 2 the drive between the rotatable body 17 and an electric motor 34 is by wires incorporating two universal joints 28, 29. The reactional torque from the substance 18 during a test, turns the stator of the motor 34 against the action of springs 36, 37. A pointer 40, pivoted at 41, is coupled to the stator of the motor 34 by two leaf-springs 48, 47, Fig. 3, any excessive force on the springs being prevented by the arms 44. The deflection of the pointer 40 relatively to a scale 43 is a measure of the viscosity of the substance. The ubstance in the containers can be maintained at a constant temperature by the circulation of a liquid in a surrounding jacket. The revolvable body 17, Fig. 2, may be a hollow cylinder open at both ends. An exchangeable transmission gear may be included between the motors and the revolvable bodies.
