Abstract

682,740. Calculating-apparatus. HUBER, F. J. A. Nov. 23, 1950 [Nov. 29, 1949], No. 28702/50. Class 106 (i). A logarithmic device for evaluating the true airspeed of an aircraft from the indicated airspeed, temperature and pressure altitude takes account of impact temperature rise at the thermometer. An evaluation is made with two settings, and Mach number and temperature rise are also shown. A circular form of the device comprises a pair of concentrically-pivoted discs 20 and 21 with a transparent radial cursor 23. Continguous logarithmic pressure scales 33 and 45 are marked off on the two discs, the former for setting the indicated airspeed (impact pressure) and the latter the indicated altitude (static pressure). The ratio of these two pressures is the Mach number and is shown directly on a scale 32 on the larger disc 20 at a reference mark 41 on a projecting portion 40 of the smaller disc, after adjusting the two discs to bring the instrument readings of airspeed and altitude on the scales 33 and 45 into coincidence. For a given Mach number the true airspeed depends only on temperature. A temperature scale 43 is therefore provided on the smaller disc and the cursor 23 is set to this scale to show the true airspeed on a scale 30 on the larger disc. To correct for temperature rise at the thermometer, the indicated temperature indicia of the scale 43 comprise a system of isothermal curves on a transparent panel provided on the smaller disc, and a reference curve 35 is marked on the larger disc to intersect the indicia 43 variably according to Mach number, the temperature scale being read along the curve 35 at its intersection with the indicia 43. The curve 35 is, for convenience, a spiral and the scales 43 and 30 are marked off accordingly. A scale 31 shows the temperature rise at the setting of the cursor. The Specification quotes formulµ for laying off the various scales and shows how they are developed from standard formulµ relating the factors involved. The scales can be computed for either subsonic or supersonic speed ranges only, or for both ranges. In the latter case the pitot tube position error, which would normally be taken account of in the subsonic range, can be omitted in order to maintain continuity.
