Abstract

682,437. Driving auxiliary mechanism on tractors, controlling motor vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Aug. 20, 1951 [Oct. 10, 1950], No. 19583/51. Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v) An agricultural tractor comprises an internal combustion engine having a crankshaft, a drive shaft and concentric sleeve axially aligned with the crankshaft, a power take-off shaft extending through the sleeve and driven by the drive shaft, change-speed gearing carried by the sleeve, a change-speed gear countershaft radially spaced from the sleeve and carrying gearing adapted to be driven from the gearing on the sleeve, traction wheels for the tractor, rear axle mechanism for driving the traction wheels, driving connections between the change-speed gearing countershaft and the rear axle mechanism, and a pair of axially aligned friction clutches, one of the clutches being arranged to selectively connect the engine crankshaft to the drive-shaft to control the transmission of engine-power to the power take-off shaft and to the traction wheels, the other of the clutches being arranged to selectively couple the drive-shaft to the sleeve to control the transmission of engine power to the traction wheels independently of the transmission of engine power to the power take-off shaft. In the arrangement shown, Figs. 1 and 5, in which a tractor chassis comprises an internal combustion engine 13, a clutch housing 14 and a changespeed gear and rear axle housing 16 and in which power take-off mechanism 22 is carried in an auxiliary housing 23, a drive-shaft 38 is connected at its forward end to the engine crankshaft 32 through a main clutch 17 and extends through the housing 16 to drive the power take-off mechanism 22. The driveshaft 38 is selectively connected through a second clutch 18 with a drive sleeve 61 of a change-speed gear 19, a countershaft 67 of which is geared to a rear axle 73. A hydraulic pump 97 used for raising and lowering links 24, 26, and carried in a housing 96 is driven by chain and sprockets from the shaft 38. Support tubes 42 and 43 surrounding the shaft 38 and carried by generally channel shaped webs 40 and 41 integrally formed with the housing 14, support clutch throw-out mechanism for the clutches 17 and 18 respectively. The throw-out mechanism for the clutch 17 comprises a sliding collar 44 for a throw-out bearing 46 engageable with an actuating lever 47 for reciprocating a pressure plate 33. The clutch which comprises a flywheel 31 carried on the crankshaft 32 and supporting the plate 33 with the interposition of friction linings 36 carried on a metal disc 34 splined to the shaft 38, is engaged by springs 49 and is disengaged by a pedal 57 through lever 50, link 52 and crank 53. The lever 50 is retracted by springs 56. The clutch 18 which is similar to clutch 17, is disengaged by means of a hand lever 94 to disconnect the engine from the change-speed gear 19 and rear axle 73. The rearward end of shaft 38 carries a pinion 111 Fig. 2, in the housing 23, a cover 113 of which may be removed to permit connection to the shaft 38 of implements and accessories. A short take-off shaft 114 which is geared to the pinion 111 drives a pulley shaft extending at right angles to the shaft 114. The pinion 111, shaft 114 and pulley-shaft may be disengaged from the shaft 38 by means of a take-off clutch.
