Abstract
A resin is formed from (1) a non-gelled interpolymer of (a) a monovinylaromatic compound monomer, (b) a monocarboxylic olefinic acid, and (c) a compound from the group consisting of unsaturated or conjugated drying oil esters or fatty acids; (2) a polyhydric alcohol with at least 3 hydroxyl groups per molecule and an optional component; (3) a polybasic acid. The interpolymer (1) is prepared by heating at 130-180 DEG C., 10-60 per cent of e.g. styrene, p-methyl or a -methyl styrene, m- and p-chloro and fluorostyrenes, m- and p-trifluoro and chlorostyrenes, o- and m-hydroxystyrenes, methoxystyrenes, and vinyl naphthalene, with (b) 2-25 per cent of an acid with chain length up to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. crotonic, methacrylic, a -chloroacrylic, acrylic and cinnamic, and (c) drying oils or fatty acids with a Woburn iodine number between 133 and 274, e.g. dehydrated castor, isomerized walnut, and conjugated soya oils and linseed fatty acids or blends of these with soya and castor oils. Catalysts, e.g. benzoyl or p-tertiary butyl peroxide, or oxygen may be present and the unreacted monomers removed when necessary by blowing with carbondioxide and nitrogen. The polyhydric alcohol (2) such as glycerol, pentaerythritol, polyallyl alcohol, mannitol, sorbitol, erythritol, and trimethylol propane, is added to (1) in sufficient amount to reduce the final acid value below 40, and the mixture is heated with a catalyst, e.g. litharge or calcium stearate while carbondioxide or nitrogen is blown through to remove water. The polybasic acid or anhydride, e.g. malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, sebacic, methylmalonic, maleic, itaconic, perfluoroglutaric or adipic, phthalic, and 1,2,4-butane-dicarboxylic may be added while the resin-forming temperature is maintained, but may be added before or simultaneously with the alcohol. The reaction may be checked prior to gelation by the addition of a petroleum hydrocarbon solvent, and may be performed under a reflux in the presence of solvents, e.g. toluene, xylene, dipentene, or low-boiling aliphatic hydrocarbons. In examples: (1) styrene, (3) a -methylstyrene, (4) p-fluorostyrene, crotonic acid, and dehydrated castor oil and fatty acids are combined with glycerol and phthalic anhydride, (2) is similar to (1) but with linseed fatty acids and pentaerythritol, (5) as (1) but with conjugated linseed fatty acids and adipic, (6) styrene, dehydrated castor oil and cinnamic acid with glycerol, (7) styrene linseed fatty acids and methacrylic acid with glycerol, (8) as (7) but with pentaerythritol and (9) and (10) as (7) but with p-fluorostyrene and a -methyl styrene respectively. Coating compositions are prepared by adding driers, e.g. cobalt, manganese and lead naphthenates, pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron blue or additional resins, e.g. phenolaldehydes, melamine or urea resins, pentaerythritol esters of resin, or ester gum, to a solution in e.g. mineral spirits and xylene.
