A rotary scarifying tool is provided at its end with a circular series of scratching teeth 2 and, inter-spersed between the said teeth, support elements or dummy teeth 3 arranged to make contact with the surface of a work piece as the tool rotates so as to limit the depth of the scratches made by the teeth 2. The teeth 2 and 3 alternate and are equally spaced apart, the teeth 2 standing slightly proud of the teeth 3. Specification 681,987 is referred to.
