Abstract

681,659. Laminated glass. KURZ, F. W. A. Feb. 20, 1951 [Feb. 22, 1950], No. 4160/51. Class 56. Laminated sheets of glass are formed by placing together side by side strips or layers 1, 2 of glass of a width greater than the desired thickness of the laminated sheet and of different colour and/or thickness, fusing the strips together to form a sheet 3 in which the strips are at right angles or an oblique angle to the surface of the sheet and stretching or drawing the sheet in a heated condition in the longitudinal direction of the strips to reduce the width of the strips and thus the thickness of the sheet. The strips may be cut and assembled in the dry state or liquid glass can be extruded or drawn from nozzles in the form of strips or layers disposed side by side. Thus thick and clear strips of glass may be combined with thinner strips of coloured glass of the same coefficient of expansion, or strips of two layer glass, e.g. flashed glass, may be used. The finished sheet may be rolled and ornamented by impressing rollers, thus parallel preferably prismatic grooves may be formed preferably at right angles to the laminations and coloured or enamelled or filled with paint or enamel. Alternatively coloured parallel strips may be provided on the ungrooved sheets. The sheets may subsequently be bent &c. The glass may be used for screening light, e.g. in luminous tube illumination, to subdue or distribute light, or to prevent dazzle, and with black laminations may be used in shop window illumination, or, with oblique laminations, as venetian blinds.
