Abstract

A method for the collective removal of impurities, particularly Cu, As, Ni, Fe and bound S, from contaminated Pb or Sn or alloys of these metals is characterized by addition of a quantity of a mixture of alkali hydroxide and S to the molten metal or alloy with energetic stirring and without removal of the dross formed on melting, the quantity of reagent added being less than that stoichiometrically equivalent to the amount of impurities. A mush is produced on the molten metal bath which consists of impurities and adhering metal. Energetic stirring is continued and a carbonaceous drying agent is added until adhering metal is separated from the mush which is transformed into a dry residue and removed from the bath. The refining agent, which preferably contains 3 to 5 parts of alkali hydroxide to 1 part of S, may be added in a proportion of 0.1 to 1 per cent by weight of the impure metal or alloy charge. Examples are given of the refining of Pb-Sn-Sb alloys.
