Class 64 (iii) [Also in Group VI] In a plate heat exchanger for the treatment of milk and like liquids and comprising a regenerative section, a pasteurizing section, a precooling section and a deep-cooling section, a displacing element 5 is located in a passage 4 in an intermediate unit 2 disposed between the pasteurizing and precooling sections of the apparatus to ensure a maximum velocity for liquid flowing between these two sections by way of said passage. The displacing element 5 may be tubular in form or, as shown, it may comprise a cylindrical rod provided with an axially extending slot 8, Fig. 2, which may accommodate the heatsensitive part 6 of a thermometer. The element may extend at either end (e.g. as shown at 5a, 5b) into the pasteurizing and precooling sections and is preferably arranged to be readily replaceable by one of a number of elements of different sizes.
