Hydrogen sulphide is continuously removed from gases by passage of the gas vertically through a downwardly moving packed bed 12 of hydrated iron oxide-containing material the horizontal cross-sections of which at any level is coincident with that of the gas path, and the sulphidized material is wholly or in part revivified after removal - from the base of the bed, during its transport to reuse or other reconditioning for re-use, through an airtight conduit 26 containing an endless conveyer 31 of drag-link, scraper or chain type. A stream of air from a blower 35 is forced upwardly and downwardly through the rising column of material. The moisture content and pH value may be adjusted before return to the purifier. The gas may pass in co- or counter-current with the purifying material. Specifications 640,065, 673,546, are referred to.
