Abstract

681,289. Change-speed control. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 14, 1951 [Feb. 24, 1950], No. 4745/50. Class 80 (ii). A coincidental fluid-pressure operated clutch and gear-shift control on a vehicle, comprises a single piston-valve 16, operated through a rod 18 or cable, by the usual multi-plane gearestablishing movements of a steering-columnmounted manual shift lever (not shown), the vertical cross-shift movement of which effects shiftrod selection mechanically through a Bowden cable (not shown), the piston-valve 16 selectively distributing and exhausting oil-pressure, from inlets 25, 20, to a single-acting spring- loaded clutch-actuating piston 2 (from inlet 25), and a double-acting spring-centralised piston 6 (from inlet 20), operating the usual gearestablishing lever 5. The housings of the clutch- and gear-pistons 2, 6, as well as that of the control-valve 16 are formed as a unitary structure integral with a cover-plate 12 which can be applied directly to an existing gear-box in place of the standard cover-plate. The valve-porting may, as shown, be such that, in moving from one gear position to another, the clutch is first disengaged, followed by neutralising the gear, in which position the clutch re-engages and again disengages before establishment of the new gear, after which the clutch finally re-engages. This double declutching may be dispensed with in a modified valve wherein the second and third lands from the top are combined. The exhaust outlet from the clutch cylinder 2 includes a restrictor 34, and a dashpot may be provided in the valve-actuating linkage to limit the speed. of gear-shift. A governorcontrolled valve may supply the cylinder 2 for automatic clutch-release at low engine-speeds, or a fluid-coupling drive may be provided. Oil pressure may be supplied by the engine-lubricating or other pump.
