Abstract

The g -isomer of benzene hexachloride is obtained in a technically pure state by selective crystallization from a solution supersaturated in a -, b - and g -isomers when there has been added thereto "d c" to a concentration of 20-50 per cent by weight, the term "d c" comprising the isomers other than a , b and g , as well as the by-products of the chlorination of benzene, especially chloro substitution products of benzene hexachloride. This addition of d c retains the a - and b -isomers in supersaturation and the amount of d c is adjusted in accordance with the amounts of a and b present. The starting material is preferably a solution enriched in g -isomer, e.g. as obtained in Specifications 655,686 or 619,677. In operation, the mother liquor from a previous crystallization cycle is diluted with a little fresh solvent and contacted with fresh benzene hexachloride at crystallization temperature until all the g -isomer is dissolved to a saturated solution thereof. A quantity of solvent equal to that added is now evaporated off, leaving the solution supersaturated in g -isomer which then crystallizes out. Before a and b appear, the solution is filtered and recycled as above. To maintain the d c concentration constant in continuous operation, a portion of the mother liquor is removed each time, evaporated to dryness and the condensed solvent returned to the solution. Examples are given of the process, using as solvents isopropyl alcohol, benzene, ethylene chlorhydrin and trichlorethylene.
