Abstract
<PICT:0680245/IV (a)/1> A continuous process for the production of phenol-formaldehyde condensation products is carried out in apparatus comprising a plurality of reaction vessels connected in series, phenol and a catalyst being continuously supplied to the first vessel and formaldehyde being continuously supplied to each reaction vessel. Specified phenols are phenol, the cresols, the xylenols, and polyhydric phenols, e.g. resorcinol. The apparatus comprises seven reaction vessels 1-7 connected in series each comprising a stirrer and being heated by vapours introduced into a double bottom 22. Liquid phenol and a catalyst solution flow continuously from supply vessels 9 and 10 into the first reaction vessel 1 and formaldehyde flows continuously from supply vessel 11 into a distribution line 32 whence it is distributed between the vessels 1-7. Vapours escaping from the reaction vessels are condensed in seven coolers 23-29. The final condensation product is delivered from the last vessel 7 via line 34. In examples (1) monohydroxybenzene and formalin are condensed in presence of sulphuric acid in the apparatus illustrated and in an apparatus comprising five reaction vessels; (2) commercial cresol and formalin are condensed in presence of sulphuric acid in the apparatus illustrated; (3) resorcinol and formaldehyde are condensed in presence of caustic soda in an apparatus comprising four reaction vessels.ALSO:<PICT:0680245/III/1> Apparatus for the continuous production of phenol-formaldehyde condensation products (see Group IV(a)) comprises seven reaction vessels 1-7 connected in series, each comprising a stirrer and being heated by vapours introduced into a double bottom 22.
