[Also in Group XXVIII] A method of applying a socket-nipple fitting to a hose end portion comprises holding the hose end within an annular cavity formed between the socket and nipple with the socket and nipple correctly positioned for final securing upon the hose end and subjecting the socket to fluid pressure within a confined space abounding the socket to deform it on to the hose, partially collapsing the said annular cavity to compress the hose end between the inner nipple and the deformed outer socket. A hose end portion comprises inner and outer layers 10 and 12 respectively and an intermediate reinforcing layer 14 bored to contact the interior surface of a socket 16. An inner nipple 18 screws into the socket and forms an annular cavity with the socket into which the hose end is introduced. Apparatus for affixing the hose end within the cavity comprises a cylindrical body 22 into which the hose end assembly is introduced. Sealing rings 24 in the body engage the enlarged end portions 34 of the socket so forming a fluidtight annular space 38 abounding the reduced socket portion. An end flange 40 on the socket locates the assembly in the body. A filler ring 11 is inserted between the socket and the intermediate layer 14 of the hose and an end closure cap 42 is screwed on to the nipple 18. The body is closed by a disc 44 having a central opening 48 which can be connected to a compressed air supply for ejecting the finally-assembled end fitting from the body. Fluid pressure is introduced through a port 26 into the cavity 38 and the socket is deformed on to the hose as shown in Fig. 4. The pressure may also be produced by gas or by means of an explosive cartridge. In an embodiment an elastic sleeve 50 having enlarged end portions 70 applies the fluid pressure to the socket 52 and seals the ends of the annular space 54. The hose end assembly together with the sleeve 50 is inserted into a cylindrical body 66 and retained in position by means of a plug 68. Fluid pressure is introduced into the space 54 through a port (not shown) to collapse the sleeve on to the socket and deform the socket on to the hose. The fluid is drained through a port 74.
