Abstract
Cellulose esters which have been dissolved in the reaction medium in which they were prepared are reacted with one or more halogeno-fatty acids or their salts in the presence of an alkali hydroxide to yield cellulose carboxy allyl ethers which will dissolve to form fibre-free solutions. Reacting the so-formed ethers with inorganic salts or bases yields the corresponding salts. The products can be cast into fibre-free films for use in the photographic industry. In an example (all parts by weight) 1 part of cellulose acetate prepared in the reaction mixture in dissolved state and containing 57 per cent combined acetic acid is dissolved in 3 parts monochloracetic acid and 2.5 parts water, and 7.5 parts of 75 per cent sodium hydroxide are added with stirring, the temperature being maintained at 45 DEG C. The reaction mixture is allowed to stand for several hours without stirring and the sodium cellulose glycollate precipitated by addition of 10 parts of methyl alcohol with stirring. The filtered precipitate is washed with methyl alcohol at 25 DEG C. until free from caustic soda and sodium chloride, and dried.
