Abstract

678,501. Coiling. VIOLLET, J. M. L. Sept. 5, 1946, No. 26655/46. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXV] An endless driving belt comprises an endless flexible core consisting of a single textile or metallic strand or several textile or metallic threads twisted together, wound helically with successive layers of metallic threads, the diameter of the wound threads being small in comparison with the diameter of the finished belt. The successive windings on the core may be of varying pitch or the helix angles may be opposite. The ends of the winding wires are tucked into the exterior of the belt thus formed. Using a core of small diameter the built-up belt may be mouldable, such as to a V or trapezoidal shape. The shape may be retained by impregnating the core and the winding threads with glue, rubber, &c. Alternatively, the belt a, b, Fig. 5, may be encased in a sheath c and moulded under pressure. The sheath c may consist of a layer of fine wound threads or rubber &c. The belt may be finally reinforced by stitching longitudinally. Suitable apparatus for making the endless belt comprises two spaced pulleys 5, 6, Fig. 6, arranged to receive the endless core 7, one of the pulleys being driven. At least one spool carrier, 9, 9a, is provided for applying the winding to the core. The spool carrier comprises a hollow shaft 16. Figs. 10 and 11, supported on a fixed base 16a The shaft 16 is longitudinally slotted at 17, as also is the platform 17a carrying the spools 8, to permit entry of the core into the hollow shaft. The platform 17a is mounted on the shaft so as to rotate relatively thereto and is driven through a stepped pulley 25 by a belt 26 arranged to permit entry of the core into the hollow shaft. One of the spool carriers shown in Fig. 6 may be inverted with respect to the other; the spool carriers may be arranged one on either side of the endless core.
