Abstract

[Also in Groups V, XV, XXV, XXXII, XXXIV and XXXV] The invention relates to apparatus for controlling or fixing the relative movement or position of a container for a substance comprising ferromagnetic particles, and an element immersed in such particles, so shaped that relative movement requires deformation of the body of particles, in which the apparent viscosity of the substance is controlled by a variable magnetic field. The substance may be iron particles with a small admixture of a liquid such as paraffin or a silicone, a coolant or antioxidant gas or a semi-solid such as grease. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91. refers to the use of such a substance in clutches of the kind described in Specification 649,553. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
