Abstract

678,307. Television; light-valves. GES. GUR FORDERUNG DER FORSCHUNG AN DER EIDGENOSSISCHEN TECHNISCHEN HOCHSCHULE. Nov. 30, 1949 [Nov. 30, 1948], No. 30791/49. Class 40 (iii). In an arrangement for reproducing television pictures in which deformation produced in a control layer included in a Schlieronoptical system consequent upon scanning with a picture signal modulated cathode-ray beams are employed to modulate light from a local source, the control layer is carried by a concave mirror. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, rays from a light source 9 reflected by a mirror 14 illuminate a rectangular area of the control layer 15 which is carried on a concave mirror 17. The mirror 14 has alternate reflecting and transparent strips, Fig. 3, the reflecting strips 19 having black borders 20 and the whole acting as the equivalent of the system of bars and slits described in Specification 674,342, so that when the control layer is undeformed, light reflected back from the surface of the concave mirror is reflected again by mirror 14 back to the source. The illuminated area is scanned by a cathode-ray beam modulated at a high frequency by a high-frequency carrier wave modulated by the video signals and the deformations of the control layer surface caused by the scanning beam cause the reflected light beam to pass in corresponding amounts between the reflecting strips 19 of mirror 14 to produce an image on a screen 23. The concave mirror 17 is held by a spring 28 against rollers 27 and is slowly rotated about its central axis 32 by a motor 31, and a cooling system 33 is provided. The source of light 9 may be an arc lamp, two arc lamps used alternately or a series of mercury-vapour lamps. To avoid edge distortions, a stop 37 with a a rectangular opening having one rounded corner, Fig. 7 (not shown), is placed over the scanned area. A colour filter may be introduced into the plane 16 for colour reproduction. Specifications 543,485 and 548,643 also are referred to.
