Abstract
678,146. Knitting. TE STRAKE, L. Jan. 27, 1947 (Nov. 12, 1946], No. 2488/47. Class 74 (ii). A fabric, e.g; that of Fig. 17, in which oonsecutive loops are made by at least three adjacent needles, in each thread, in lines oblique to the selvedge, first in one transverse direction and then in the other, is produced on a machine having two beds of latch needles, rising and falling in alternation with each other, the needles in one bed being disposed alternately with those of the other bed; and two series of thread guides arranged side-by-side and reciprocating along the line of the needles, so that the threads from the two series cross in the paths of and are taken in pairs by the needles, first of one bed and then of the other, the needles falling to draw loops therefrom and to knock over the loops of the previous course formed in the same way. The fabric is ladder-resistant. The needles 12, 22 are mounted in holders 13, 23, which are reciprocated from the main-shaft 4, through an eccentric 30 and adjustable connecting-rod 32, a rocking lever 36, 37, via an adjustable slot connection 35, and adjustable rods 39, 40. Ground yarns are taken from pairs 5 and 6 of warp beams and fed by thread guiding bars 18, 28, moved longitudinally by stepped cam discs, themselves rotated by the main shaft and operating through rocking levers and adjustable rods. Selvage threads from warping beams are fed by thread guiding frames 49. A number of such frames may be arranged across the whole width of the bed; e.g. for patterning. Weft threads from fixed cones may be laid in by thread guides 62 borne on a carrier 60 reciprocating with a variable stroke. The carrier is reciprocated by a lever 66, rocked about its pivot 67 by the rocking of a member 78 about its pivot 79. The member 78 is rocked by a slide 74 reciprocated vertically by a pin 73 thereon running in a cam groove 72 in a disc 71 driven from the main-shaft. The lever 66 is connected with the member 78 by a pin 80 working in a slot 81 in a disc 82 rotatable to vary the extent of oscillation of the lever. The disc 82 is rotated one way or the other, from the main-shaft, through shaft 68, crank-pin and connecting-rod 97, 98, ratchet device 96, a gear 95 and further gearing, including a tumbler-reverse 90, 89, 88. The position of the tumbler reverse is determined by interchangeable cam segments 94 borne on a disc rotating with the gear 95 and acting in opposition to a spring 93. Fabric draw-off is by means of a pair of rollers 59, one of which is driven, through gearing, from the main-shaft. The stitch length may be adjusted by changing the draw-off tension.
