Abstract
A high molecular weight polymer of alpha-methyl styrene is prepared by maintaining a mixture consisting of alpha-methyl styrene and finely-divided metallic sodium at a temperature between 0 DEG and 30 DEG C., preferably 10 DEG and 25 DEG C., until from 20 to 35 per cent of the alpha-methyl styrene is polymerized, the mixture thereafter filtered to separate the particles of metallic sodium from the solution of polymer in monomeric alpha-methyl styrene, and the polymer recovered from the filtered solution. The amount of metallic sodium in the mixture is preferably between 0.5 and 10 per cent by weight of the alpha-methyl styrene. The polymer preferably has a molecular weight corresponding to an intrinsic viscosity in toluene of at least 0.4 and contains approximately 0.06 per cent of its weight of chemically combined sodium; it may be recovered from the filtered solution by distilling at 170-190 DEG C. at a pressure of 10 mm. or less for approximately 10 hours. The process may be carried out in continuous manner by feeding monomeric alpha-methyl styrene to the reaction mixture of finely-divided sodium, alpha-methyl styrene and polymeric alpha-methyl styrene, and withdrawing reaction liquor consisting of a solution of from 20 to 35 per cent by weight of the polymer in monomeric alpha-methyl styrene through a filter, the filtered solution being distilled to separate the monomer from the polymer, and the monomer recycled to the reaction.
