In an electric ironing machine comprising a roller 2 driven by a motor (not shown) and an electrically heated " iron " 1, movable towards the roller by a force exerted by the operator, not only is the motor-driven roller controlled but also the iron is moved by the operator by a pedal 19 or like remote control means operated by the foot, knee or other part of the operator's leg, through a flexible or adjustable intermediate connection. In the example shown, the internal wire 17 of a Bowden cable 23 connects an arm 18 on the pedal 19 to a yoke 15 secured to a boss 16 mounted on a shaft carrying a cam for operating the " iron " 1. The means for operating the iron and switching on the motor are as described in Specifications 673,538 and 673,539, and a handle 5 for alternative manual operation is included. The pedal 19 may be biased to " off " position by a spring 22, or alternatively it may require positive operation in both directions. In place of a Bowden cable, use may be made of a wire which is rotatable, or rotatable and slidable in a sheath, or of a slidable chain. A manually-operated heat control switch 26 for the " iron " 1 may be provided. Alternatively, a switch for this circuit may be operated by the pedal 19 or a separate pedal, or closure of a single switch may be arranged to initiate automatic completion of the switching operation by relay means.
