Abstract

677,023. Foundry plant; continuous casting-machines. JUNGHANS, S. Feb. 14, 1950 [Nov. 22, 1948], No. 3789/50. Class 83 (i). [Also in Group II] In the continuous casting of highmelting-point materials, e.g. steel, the molten material is delivered to the mould in regular predetermined quantities, e.g. by a series of ladles which are successively filled, conveyed to the mould, discharged, cleaned, repaired or replaced, and refilled in a circuit, which may be circular, continuously. Each ladle 19, Fig. 3, may be centred in a metal vessel 16 lined with insulating material 18 by blocks 20 so that its opening 19a is in line with a nozzle 10, removably secured by a rotary annulus 28. The opening 19a is normally closed by a detachable plug 23 supported by an arm 30 and operated by known mechanism, not shown. The vessels 16 are each suspended by a yoke 7, Fig. 1, from a pulley 5 adjustably carried by a trolley movable on a circular track 1. At station I, after removing a cover 22, the crucible is charged with molten steel from a furnace 2, at II a nozzle, preheated in a furnace 11 is fitted, at III the vessel 6 is lowered and the molten steel is discharged into the mould 12. The vessel is then raised and at IV the nozzle 10 is detached and returned to the furnace 11 for repair or replacement and preheating and the plug 23 similarly to furnace 15. At V the vessel is cleaned by a burner 13, at VI it is detached from the yoke 7, heated in a furnace 14 in inverted position and re-attached and at VII the pre-heated plug 23 is refitted ready for another cycle. Electric or other heating means may be arranged between the ladle 19 and lining 18. In a modification and during the discharge of one ladle, the next may be lowered into position on the mould so that its discharge may start directly the other is empty. In order that the two nozzles may be brought close together each may be arranged eccentrically in the bottom of its vessel 16.
