Abstract

An artificial filament is obtained by extruding viscose into a liquid coagulating medium in which formation of free sulphur and consequent deposition of sulphur on the filament and on the spinneret are prevented by removing free oxygen from the medium. After the oxygen has been removed from the coagulating liquid, the latter may be impregnated with an inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The surface of the coagulating liquid may be blanketed with an inert gas which is heavier than air. As shown, the spinning solution is extruded through spinneret 10 into coagulating liquid 14. Container 15 is closed by a hinged <PICT:0676831/IV (a)/1> cover 17. The free edge of the cover, when closed, is spaced slightly from the edge of wall 16 to provide passage for the filament 22. The degassing apparatus 45 is connected by pipe 30 to a reservoir 32, which contains coagulating liquid, and is connected by pipe 34 to a receiver 36. The liquid is charged with carbon dioxide through pipe 41. A pump P propels the liquid from receiver 36 to the coagulating vessel 15. A pipe 43 leads coagulating liquid to a regenerator 44 from which pipe 46 leads to the reservoir 32. The liquid is reconditioned or reconcentrated in regenerator 44. A pipe 48 leading from a source of carbon dioxide is provided so that carbon dioxide may be bubbled through the coagulating liquid. Since the vessel 15 is closed except for the small outlet for the filament, a blanket of carbon dioxide is present over the surface of the liquid so that surface absorption of air or other gases by the liquid is prevented.
