Abstract

<PICT:0676391/III/1> A method of carrying out thermal processes as, for example, the hydrogenation of pulverulent solid bodies are present or are produced, or catalytic hydrogenation procsses as, for example, the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to hydrocarbons &c. with the aid of nickel, cobalt or iron catalysts in a finely divided state, comprises passing the reacting gases with the fine material in suspension therein through a space into which or out of which heat is introduced or discharged by means of a moving solid heat carrier in the form of granules or lumps, the ratio of the grain size of the latter to the grain size of the suspended solid being at least 7 to 1 whereby the charged gases flow through the interstices between the granules or lumps of the heat carrier. The apparatus which in the form shown is adapted to the gasification of solid fuels (see Group XII) consists of a vertical shaft furnace 1 down through which moves a mass of ceramic bodies of uniform size for example 8, 12 or 25 mm. The bodies are extracted by a wheel 13 and elevated to a hopper 12 for recirculation. In the upper part of the furance they are heated to 1200 DEG to 1300 DEG C by combustion gases from a burner 15 and pass down into a chamber 3 into which the pulverulent material of grain size 0-1 mm. is introduced and is carried up through the interstices in the heated mass by gases flowing up from the lowermost zone of the shaft. The gases discharge through ports 23 into a dust extractor 24 and thence to further purifying plant 26, 27 and 30. The process may be carried out at pressures of 20 atmospheres or over. Where exothermic reactions are involved the heat carrier may be used to abstract heat from the reaction vessel.
