Abstract

676,307. Sleepers ; tie-bars. HEJLEK, F. July 19, 1949. [July 19, 1948 ; Aug. 10, 1948 ; Nov. 24, 1948] Nos. 19009/49. 19010/49 and 19011/49. Class 104(ii). A railway sleeper comprises a girder 3 of I or T-section, or an inverted length of an old railwav rail, with its ends seated and fixedly engaged within the upper portons of concrete blocks 2, so that the flange or foot of the girder is substantially level with the upper surface of the block to enable rails to be attached thereto in known manner. The lower flange and part of the web 5 of the girder intermediate the portions below the track rails 13 may be cut away to reduce the weight of the sleeper. Alternatively two short end lengths of normal section may be welded to an intermediate length with the bottom flange and part of the web removed. The faces of the concrete blocks are inclined towards the axis of the track, and the central portion of the girder or the parts immediately adjacent the concrete blocks are accordingly bent downwardly. Rectangular slots or cavities 7, Fig. 5, which extend through the upper flange of the girder into the web 5 are provided at each side of the track rail to receive hook headed bolts 9, to which rail-engaging cleats are secured by nuts 16, the portions of the concrete block below the slots being provided with relatively broader cavities to allow the hooked heads of the bolts to be turned through 90 degrees. In order to withstand heavy lateral stresses on the permanent way a rib 17 is welded to the girder 3 at each side of the base of the track rail, the cleats 18, 18<SP>1</SP> being shaped accordingly. In a modification Fig. 7, the ends of aT-sectioned girder 3<SP>1</SP> are anchored in concrete blocks 2<SP>1</SP> by a metal reinforcing rod which is inserted through a hole in the web and formed into two loops 19, 19<SP>1</SP>. The rod is preferably welded to the web in the region of the hole therethrough. As shown, the upper surface of the girder has a transverse convexity which reduces the area of contact with the track rail secured to it.
