Abstract

676,255. Typewriters &c. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. Aug. 30, 1950, No. 4802/50. Class 100 (iv). [Also in Group XIX] A machine for printing multi-line information under the control of a single record card of the type described in Specification 672,339 is modified to print a three line address twice as shown in Fig. 21 under the control of the single record card. Means automatically operable upon completion of printing of the address the first time are provided to initiate the operation of the address printing means to print the same address a second time. Fig. 2C shows a master card 508 provided with a punched hole in the R position which conditions the machine for multi-line printing as described in Specification 672,339 and also a punched hole X immediately below in the same column which causes by its presence the repeat printing of the selected number of lines. To provide for the selective control of repeat multi-line printing the plug connection 535 (Fig. 18) is omitted and instead there is interposed between the plug socket 504 corresponding to the column and for control and the plug socket 536 the "b" contacts of a relay R.47 (Fig. 20). When there is no hole at the X position the R.47 relay is not energised so that the closed " b " contacts complete the multiline stop circuit, as if the connection 535 had been made. The presence, however, of the punched hole in the X position completes a circuit to actuate and hold the R.47 relay so that the " a " contacts are closed thus breaking the connection to the multi-line stop circuit 536 and preventing the termination of the three line printing cycle. Operation.-At the end of the third reading cycle the MLR start relay R.20, Fig. 17d, is again set up to initiate the repeat multi-line printing. At the end of the third cycle when R.27 is picked up at 312 degrees a circuit is completed from the line 272 through CR2 cam contacts, now closed (Fig. 17e) R27-2 relay contacts, now closed, the MLR repeat couple plug socket 570, plug connection 571, socket 572 to R48 P, relay coil wire 557 to the line side 273. The hold circuit for R.48 is through the " h " contact and cam contacts CR33 back to line side 272. The co-selector relay R48 remains energised during the fourth cycle and to the end of the sixth printing cycle because the R27 relay is held energised and CR2 cam contacts overlap CR33 cam contacts. R48 relay now being energised will open its " b " contacts (Fig. 20) thereby preventing the completion of an impulse circuit during the sixth printing cycle to the MLR start relay R.20 and R.26 relay. R48b relay. contacts may therefore be regarded as interlock contacts to prevent a second repeat operation of the machine after the sixth cycle. The termination of the multi-line printing after the sixth cycle is effected under the control of the line selecting control hole (3 in this instance). The readout commutator of the associated column reads out the " 3 " hole at 93 degrees to complete during the sixth printing cycle, a circuit from line 272, through the readout commutator, plug socket 504 (Fig. 17b) plug wire 575 to the R48 a relay contacts (Fig. 20) which being now closed extend the circuit by plug wire 576 to plug socket 536. From this plug socket 536 (Fig. 17d) the circuit is completed by the CR98 contacts (which also close at 93 degrees) and R25-4 relay contacts (which close in the sixth cycle) to P2 pickup coil of the MLR release relay R.29 wire 527 to the line 273. R.29 relay opens the R29-2 relay contacts to de-energise the R.30 or MLR interlock relay, R30-7 relay contacts will now open (Fig. 17e) thereby deenergising R.41 and R.47 relays when CF10 contacts open. De-energisation of the R.30 relay and closure of R.30-2 contacts (Fig. 17a) enable the gripper clutch magnet to be energised to feed the master card out of the second reading station to the stacker drum and a following card to the second reading station. R.30-1 relay contacts will also close to cause energisation of the card picker clutch magnet which will cause feeding of a card from the magazine to the pre-sensing station. Specifications 623,283, [Group XIX], and 605,132 also are referred to.
