Apparatus for binding books by the action of heat and pressure on the backs of books which have been impregnated with paste which hardens under the action of heat or on backs impregnated with such paste having applied thereto webbing or paper strips comprises a chuck for the books and a heated roller with its axis parallel to the main plane of the chuck and mounted to press against and be rolled on the back of a book held by the chuck. The chuck comprises a lower heated press beam 7 resting on a base plate 1 and carrying a book receiving plate 8, and an upper slidable heated press beam 9 carried by pillars 2 and 3 and regulated by an adjusting screw 10 on a rail 11 joining the pillars 2, 3. The axle of the roller 16 is mounted in members 24 connected to axle bearings 12, 13 mounted on pillars 4, 5 and under the pressure of springs 14, 15. The roller 16 is pressed into contact with a book 22 on plate 8 by means of plates 29 mounted at each end of the axle 25 and having slots to enable them to slide on screws on the members 24, the plates 29 being pressed by springs 17, 18 between their outer ends and rods 19, 19<SP>1</SP> joining the bearings 12, 13. The roller 16 is caused to roll over the back of the book by means of a lever 20, pivoted at 32 to a central pillar 6 and secured to a rod 28 carried by arms 27 on the upper rod 19<SP>1</SP>, operation of the lever 20 by its handle 21 causing the rod assembly, bearings 12, 13 and members 24 to move vertically against the action of springs 14, 15. The roller 16 and beams 7, 9 are electrically heated by resistances connected to wires 34, 35.
