In a machine for twisting polygonal crosssection wire suitable for drive screw nails, a drum 21 for the stock is carried in a non- rotating frame B mounted within a rotating frame A to and from which the wire passes through bores on the axis of rotation to a winding drum D on a fixed support E. The wire is given one half of the twist in passing from guide rolls 24, 25 on the frame B to guide rolls 26, 27 on the frame A and the final half twist in passing in the opposite direction from guide rolls 29, 30 on the frame A to fixed guide rolls 31, 33 on the support E. The winding drum D and frame A are rotated through infinitely variable gears so that any desired pitch of twisting may be obtained. The frame B is freely mounted on shafts 18, 19 in the frame A and is prevented from rotating therein by reason of its centre of gravity being disposed below the axis of rotation. The fixed rollers 24, 25 have circumferential grooves of a cross-section corresponding to the profile of the wire to prevent rotation thereof. The rollers 26-31 have annular grooves and are so disposed as to bend the wire approximately at right-angles over the rollers 26 and 30 to prevent slip when twisting. The drum D may be removed and the wire passed round a flanged wheel 37 to a bobbin machine.
