A surgical chair for orthopaedic treatment of the hip comprises in combination, means for supporting the patient's legs and feet, such means being adjustable to provide different desired angles of abduction and separate means for imposing on each foot a predetermined resistance to the rotation of the foot about the longitudinal axis of the leg. As shown a tubular support is provided with a seat 10 and an angularly adjustable back. Knee supports 28 adjustable as to height by means of a stem 32 and also adjustable as to angular position are pivotally connected to the support by two systems of links while foot supports 44 are mounted on bases 22 which are adjustable along rods 23 which themselves are pivoted at 24 to the tubular support. The knee supports 28 comprises semi-cylindrical rests mounted for partial rotation by means of rollers 29 and fixed guides 31. Each support 28 is provided with a flexible cover 39 and straps 40 whereby the knee may be securely fastened in position. The foot rest 44 comprises a plate having a heel rest 45 and foot straps 47. The plate is mounted for pivotal movement by means of a shaft 43 upon which are freely mounted a pair of arms 55, 56. provided with pulleys 57. A weight 52 is arranged to slide vertically on guides 51 and a chain 58 is arranged over the pulleys 57, pulleys 54 on the guides 51 and a pulley 59 on the weight 52. As the foot and leg are rotated in exercising the hip one of the arms 55, 56, according to the direction of rotation of the foot, is rotated by means of a pin 61 on the foot rest 44 causing the weight 52 to be raised thereby applying resistance to the rotation of the foot, the resistance decreasing as the amount of rotation increases.
